Step two...

The next phase of online self indulgence.
I made the mistake of monkeying around with my original BLOG located here http://here2ventandwine.blogspot.com/ and ruining it.
I am useless.
I am starting over..and here we go.

Uh OH!!

So here is something that you don't see everyday.

My father in law called me the other morning after just coming in from a morning of 'pickeral' fishing.
I know it's called Walleye...but I happen to be in Rome... I live in Rome in fact.

It is even listed on the menus in local restaurants as pickeral.

We Canadians have never been much for reality....

..Anyway...Gerry informs me that in the night a giant lake freighter ran aground right out in front of the water treatment plant in about 19 ft of water.

Not sure how this happened.

The shipping channel is very clearly lit with giant sounder buoys all the way out from under the bridges...not to mention fancy smancy electronics....

" I thought you were driving the boat??...but I thought you were driving the boat??...I WASN'T DRIVING THE BOAT!!!!....doh!

Hmmm
Not exactly a shining moment for our Captain.

By the time the kids and I got down to take a look there was already a crowd of gawkers assembled to witness the poor ships misfortune.
'Haven't these people got anything better to do with their time!!!

:o)

It was pretty neat though.

They were well into the first plan of attack.

I guess the idea was to use two tug boats to try and push the back end off the shoals.

This wasn't working...lol..

One thing that struck me was that nothing interrupts the pickeral slaughter. Not even a nautical emergency.

The area was still peppered with boats trying get over that sweet spot...which was right around where the boat ran aground.

Could the Captain have been trying to dead drift the Pickeral hole??

Hmmmm

MEAT!!!!!...MORE MEAT!!!!!!

Speaking of meat....

I got chance to fire up the smoker and do up some of the Lake Michigan salmon we'd caught the other day.

I only realized after it was too late that JB had suggested I try his 'dry cure' brine method.

Maybe next time...

The fish turned out really good although personally I like a little more heat to it. I took some into work yesterday and the Border Monkies devoured it.
even the people that "dont like fish" raved about it. I guess thats what happens when you take something healthy and completely undermine any of its nutritional benefits with an abundance of salt and known carcinogen.

:o)

Interesting day yesterday at work...the world is indeed a very strange place and my job is anything but boring.

  1. WOW! I love the fact that every 2-3 years we have a major Freigter event like this. Living where we do we often take the shipping industry for granted. There are not many places where you can consistantly see appartment building sized vessels manipulate narrow quarters. It's amazing there really isn't more of these events. Luckily for us these occurances seldom result in any loss of containment and often only require the brute force of 3-4 Tugs and some old fashioned ingenuity. I guess nothing can stop the shitrats from in their quest for Walleye! Nothing!!!! LOL! Good for them I guess. Salmon looks good. Where is mine you POS?
